I went around the Memorial Union at the University of Maine and asked 40 undergraduate students the first 3 words that come to mind when they hear the word, "insects."

Many of the words were repeated by multiple respondents, including:

15 bug

    5 legs

    5 ant

    4     small

    3     ladybug

    3     wings

    2     dirty

    2        spider

    2     cute

    2     beetle

    2     butterfly

    2     sting

    2     outside

    2     disgusting

    2     green

    2     crawly

    2     bee

    2     exoskeleton

    2     antennae

    2     crawl

    2     eyes

I walked around tables at the union and passed around my notebook for people to write their responses. The responses before theirs were covered with a piece of paper to avoid biased responses. (Photo by Camryn Sudimick)
